Demographics

Based on a census of residents, houses and flats conducted on 26 May 2001, the city had 53,097 inhabitants, of which 25,917 were male and 27,180 were female. 51.19% of the permanent inhabitants were female. The number of inhabitants economically active was 27,317, of which 13,783 were male and 13,534 were female. 51.4% of the permanent inhabitants were economically active.

By number of inhabitants (total population in the City of Prievidza as of 19 May 2006 was 52,024, of which 25,502 were male and 26,522 were female, 50.98% of permanent inhabitants were female Prievidza is the fourth largest district in Slovakia. Only the districts of Nitra, Prešov and Žilina have more inhabitants. Population density significantly exceeds the Slovak average. The number of inhabitants living in the district has grown almost 3.5 times over the past 150 years, where one period of marked stagnation (1921 - 1950) and another period of extraordinarily dynamic growth (1950 - 1991) were documented.

There are four cities and 48 municipalities located within the district's jurisdiction.
