Artificial Ice Rink at Námestie slobody
The artificial ice rink, which has already been assembled at Námestie slobody, directly in the heart of the city, for two winters, has become a big hit for city residents, especially youngsters. It was obtained by the city through contributions made by a foreign sponsor. The 20 x 40 meter ice rink, considered the largest in Slovakia, is installed each year on the main square at the beginning of November. Depending on the outside temperature, residents can use it until the end of February, thanks to a special technology that keeps the ice frozen in temperatures up to +10 degrees Celsius. There is no admission charge for the ice rink, which is a great attraction for children and youth. "In the winter months there is nothing more beautiful to watch from the office windows than a number of skaters and frolicking children with something useful to do in their free time," city mayor Ing. Ján Bodnár has repeatedly stated. The artificial ice rink is also used for organized ice events, dedicated above all to young people: an ice carnival for children, the city’s celebration of St. Nicholas’s arrival, etc.
